The Wild Horse Course

in collaboration with GEMS and Vista Charter School

At T.A.M.E. the Wild Horse Course, our mission is to empower at-risk youth through transformative connection with wild-horses. We provide a unique 9-week program that fosters social and emotional skills, guiding participants towards personal growth and resilience. By partnering with Vista Charter School and GEMS, we help youth earn credits towards high school graduation while nurturing the bond between humans and mustangs, ultimately setting mustangs up for a successful adoption. Together, we create a pathway to brighter futures, fostering confidence, responsibility, and community engagement.

Weekly themes

Our Wild Horse Course offers a transformative experience with weekly themes focused on ego, patience, and communication, benefiting both at-risk youth and mustangs in their journey toward trust and partnership. Each week, participants explore a specific theme that fosters personal growth and essential life skills both in and out of the training area. Through exercises that challenge their understanding of ego, students learn humility and teamwork, while the emphasis on patience teaches them to respect the natural learning rhythm of themselves and their horses. The communication theme promotes trust and understanding, equipping participants with the tools to connect deeply with mustangs and enhance their horsemanship skills. As they engage with these themes, youth develop resilience, empathy, and confidence, creating lasting bonds with their equine partners and cultivating valuable life lessons in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Empowering Futures

The Wild Horse Course offers Vista students a unique opportunity to earn credits towards their high school graduation while engaging in meaningful experiences. By participating in this innovative program, students not only learn valuable horsemanship skills but also gain life lessons in responsibility, teamwork, and personal growth. The hand-on nature of the course allows them to apply what they learn in real-life situations, fostering a sense of achievement and motivation to succeed academically. As they connect with mustangs and fellow participants, students develop critical social and emotional skills that enhance their overall well-being and prepare them for future challenges. Ultimately, the credit they receive supports their academic journey while encouraging them to explore passions, making their educational experience more enriching and fulfilling, and paving the way for a brighter future.

Hands-on activities

Vista students engage in our hands-on horsemanship activities, where they dive into immersive experiences that build practical skills and foster a profound connection with mustangs. These activities are designed to challenge individuals physically and mentally, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones and develop confidence in their abilities. From groundwork exercises to riding techniques, each session emphasizes the importance of communication, trust, and respect between horse and handler. Participants learn to read horse behavior, understand body language, and respond appropriately, enhancing their overall horsemanship skills while instilling valuable life lessons such as patience, resilience, and teamwork. In this supportive environment, individuals cultivate a sense of community and shared purpose, making each hands-on activity a stepping stone toward personal growth and a lifelong love for horsemanship.

Community Engagement

Community engagement is a vital component of our Wild Horse Course, fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility among participants and local residents. By inviting community members to witness and participate in various activities, we create opportunities for collaboration and support that extend beyond the training area. Workshops, open houses, and volunteer days encourage individuals and families to engage with the program, promoting awareness about the challenges faced by mustangs and the benefits of equine mentorship for at-risk youth. This collaborative approach not only strengthens the bonds between participants and their equine partners but also cultivates a vibrant network of advocates committed to the well-being of both horses and youth in our community. Through these initiatives, we aim to inspire a collective effort toward healing, growth, and positive change for all involved.

The Power of Experiential Learning

Creative learning thrives in environments where hands-on experiences and imaginative exploration are prioritized. Through activities like the Wild Horse Course, participants engage in innovative problem-solving and critical thinking as they interact with horses and navigate real-life challenges. This dynamic approach not only stimulates curiosity but also encourages students to express themselves artistically and emotionally, fostering a deeper understanding of their own capabilities. By blending creativity with practical skills, learners develop a holistic perspective that empowers them to approach tasks with confidence and originality, ultimately enhancing overall educational experience.
